Directed by: Riingo
Starring: Indraneil Sengupta, Priyanka, Shaheb, Rii
Nil (Indraneil) and Nikita’s (Priyanka) world is as neat and pretty as a picture postcard — he’s a corporate high-flier, she’s a promising singer and they live in a swanky apartment — till the day everything goes wrong.
Nil spills coffee on the bed, Nikita burns her finger while ironing, Nil forgets about Nikita’s singing competition, the tyre goes flat as they are about to drive, Nil loses a business deal at work and has a fight with Nikita.
As he sits brooding, Nil meets a magician (Shaheb) who teaches him the three magic steps to make relationships work. And just when Nil tries to make it up to Nikita, she dies in a car crash.
There’s more confusion as Nil realises that all this was just a dream. But what if the dream becomes reality? That’s exactly what happens as Nil realises his dream has unleashed a chain of irreversible events.
Sounds all too familiar? Yes, Jodi Ekdin is a rip-off of the 2004 Hollywood blockbuster If Only. And those who have seen the Jennifer Love Hewitt-Paul Nicholls romance would know how Jodi Ekdin’s Nil-Nikita are going to end up. Only that Riingo has swapped the characters at the end.
Yet, we would have loved an Indianised — rather Bengali — version of If Only — if only Riingo had pulled it off. The film’s core issue — protagonists in a live-in relationship — is a first for Tollywood. But there aren’t enough crisis situations, Nil-Nikita’s fights are too casual and the drama of an orderly world going suddenly topsy-turvy is missing from Riingo’s script. However, the DI and the 5.1 digital mixing make the film a visual treat.
Watch out for: Indraneil. He is superb in both the sad and happy scenes. One hero Tollywood must seriously think of investing in. Also, Rii, as Nikita’s bosom pal who warns her of Nil’s taken-for-granted attitude. And Shaheb. He shines in his bit role of a magician (or as Nil’s conscience-keeper). We know where he has learned his magic though!
