Globsyn Skills Development organised a National Skills Convocation at the Science City Auditorium on July 12. More than 3,000 students from 151 colleges and 20 states graduated from various vocational courses including IT/ITeS, banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), security and telecom.
The initiative by Globsyn Skills is aimed at building and connecting an ecosystem of skill development. “We are already in about six-seven core sectors — banking, retail, telecom, welding and security. The objective for us is to get into as many sectors possible, especially at the entry levels where the maximum help is required,” said Rahul Dasgupta, joint managing director, Globsyn Skills Development, Ltd.
According to Ambarish Datta, director, BFSI, Sector Skill Council, India’s problem is that it has less number of industry-ready people. “The challenges are many. How do we get more people to take up skills training? How do we ensure that people who get certified get priority hiring? How do we enhance capacity?” said Datta, adding that the STAR scheme had been a success.
The STAR scheme or the National Skill Certification and Monetary Reward Scheme is an NSDC (National Skill Development Corporation) initiative which is being implemented by Globsyn. Its objective is to encourage skill development for youth by providing financial rewards for successful completion of approved training programmes. “Trainees don’t have to pay anything for STAR, they are certified and they get their money back,” said Dasgupta.
NSDC plays the instrumental role in implementing this scheme that proposes to cover all job roles in all sectors.
