Calcutta-based fashion designer Debarun Mukherjee, who has been a regular at national fashion weeks over the past few years and is known for his high pret and diffusion clothes, is all set to open his flagship store, Debarun Curates, on Lake View Road.
“The idea of a store came to me two years back. I was not getting the right kind of people to associate with and I scouted for the location for six months,” said Debarun, who till now has been retailing from his workshop in Kasba and 85 Lansdowne in Calcutta and other fashion stores across the country. Having spent 10 years in the fashion industry, he feels the time is just right to open his own store. “I have got to know the industry in and out. I know my clients. I have learnt from my mistakes,” he said.
The store at 24B Lake View Road (near Kamala Girls’ School) opens doors on November 18. Before that, Debarun took t2 for a walk-through.
Paoli Dam got into two looks by Debarun, just for t2. A habotai silk shaded cocktail sari teamed with a corset — a chic and sleek look that’s just right for a formal dinner. “I loved the colours on the cocktail sari. Though it is meant for the evenings, I can wear it anytime,” said Paoli.
A beige-and-gold embroidered “stiletto dress” in a blend of silk and cotton, teamed with printed skinny pants, made the Tolly actress “feel royal”. “It’s a lovely collection. I loved the clutches, the interiors... ivory and wood… two of my favourites. Beige and gold is again a favourite combination. I loved that he gave me pants instead of churidar,” said Paoli.
The 400sq ft store wears an off-white, gold and wood look, complete with warm lights. “Off-white and gold… I’ve always loved that combination. The idea behind the interiors is for the clothes to stand out,” said Debarun. Saris, resort wear, menswear, tunics, Anarkalis, lehngas, stiletto gowns… you will find a variety of occasion wear here.
Besides Debarun’s own label, the store will also stock accessories like clutches by Priyanka Baid (Duet Luxury) and footwear.
Debarun has “dedicated” a collection called Golden Line to the store, in keeping with the decor. “Ninety per cent of it would be my clothes. I have a lot of designer friends whose clothes I always like and who I want to stock. I plan to have a pop-up every two months... that’s why the name Debarun Curates,” said Debarun.
