Lady Gaga’s Inauguration Day couture jacket, the golden dove with an olive branch brooch and the voluptuous red Schiaparelli skirt were a mix of the quirky and the classy, and well, very gaga. To top it all there was the crown braid. People can’t stop talking about it.
But here’s reminding you that if the Gaga braid is trending now, we have in this part of the world known it for long as a humble/humbling thing: the berabinuni (fence style braid?) that all good girls of a certain generation were forced to tie their hair into at bedtime. There was another bedtime braid variant: kalabinuni (banana braid), when a braid was lifted up and its end tied above to the base. We’ll wait for its new global name.
