The new-look Bombaim looks colonial with a Bombay vibe

TT Bureau Published 23.02.18, 12:00 AM

What: Bombaim

Where: 218 AJC Bose Road (diagonally opposite La Martiniere for Girls)

Open: 10am-7pm; through the week

Bombaim, the multi-designer store on AJC Bose Road that opened doors eight years back, has recently been revamped to give it a new look and feel. “I just felt that I needed a change of space... a lot of heart has gone into it. When you start something, you are testing waters. Now when I am doing it, I am doing it with full conviction,” says founder and creative director Richa Kanoi.

While the old-world feel of the colonial bungalow has been retained, the decor brings in some “Bombay elements” as well. “We’ve of course retained the arches, the floor-ceiling windows. We have retained the main aspects of the colonial bungalow, but we have tried to bring in a lot of Bombay too… so, a lot of the sea and stars,” says Richa, who came to Calcutta from Bombay when she got married a decade ago.

The mother of one combines her passion for design with her love for architecture and interiors in the new-look Bombaim, which she had originally started as an “instinctual space”. “I was always sure that it would work. The biggest learning has been understanding the buyers of Calcutta... how to get the consumers and designers to play with each other correctly. I am still going with the designers I believe in,” she says.

Richa has a lot of plans for Bombaim. Yes, the project is still a “work-in-progress” for her.

The 1,000sq ft store has been entirely refurbished. Richa wanted the new look to be a blend of “strong” and “warm”. While the ceiling finds inspiration in “stars”, the scalloped floor draws from the sea.
The store continues to stock the likes of Rahul Mishra, Rasa, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Abraham & Thakore, and has also introduced new brands like Tilla, Ikai (in picture), Akaaro, Bodice, Payal Pratap and Shift.
There is an entire section dedicated to jewellery with brands like Isharya, Scarlet Sage, Kassa, Dhora and Ambir.
A corner also stocks Bombay Perfumery fragrances and candles by Shift. “Our clients like the fact that it is an intimate space, a beautiful setting and the curation is tight,” says Richa.
