The FIFA U-17 World Cup might be over, but the football fever is just hotting up at the 5-a-side Mercantile Soccer Tournament presented by Calcutta Rangers Club in association with
The Telegraph. The tourney kicked off on November 7, with 16 teams. Last week saw the group stage matches. t2 caught the action from the sidelines at the Maidan club.
“This is one of the oldest corporate football tournaments in the city after CC&FC’s. Players enjoy the game after office. It is exciting for all the teams to participate and it is good to provide an opportunity to play on such a nice ground at this time of the year. I am happy to contribute my bit in making the tournament a success,” said Jamshid Nassiri, the Calcutta Maidan legend and referee for the day.
“We might have lost the match today but we look forward to bettering our results next time,” said Soumya Saha, captain of Tata Consultancy Services, after their 1-2 loss against Glidecart. For him, the feeling of turning up for one’s company is a great feeling — “a great way to bond with your co-workers and also to relieve stress”.
RULES
1. A total of eight players in each team.
2. Two halves of 10 minutes each with a
five-minute break in between.
3. Five players can be on the field at any
particular time.
4. Rolling substitution of three players in each half is allowed.
“The tournament has been on since 1996, so about 21 years. This time 16 teams including Tata Consultancy Services, Cognizant, Standard Chartered, HSBC and Bharat Petroleum are taking part in the tournament. It’s a way for the people working in a corporate environment to play and have fun,” said Darrel Webber, honorary general secretary, Calcutta Rangers Club.
