Auto rickshaws are numero uno on my list of complaints against the city’s traffic. Tying for a close second are the state buses and mini-buses. What’s particularly hilarious about these buses is the fact that they inevitably have a little public welfare slogan painted on the back which reads “please obey traffic rules”. And yet they’re the worst offenders against those very rules!
Auto rickshaws don’t even bother to pay lip service to the idea. Most of them ply even on the busiest of thoroughfares with the impression that only autos have the right of way. They zip in from left, right and centre and are totally unconcerned about safety. This leaves other drivers as well as the pedestrians extremely vulnerable.
But even through all the mess, I love driving. I think the traffic situation has improved from before. These days, it’s a rare for someone to skip a traffic light.
