Fourteen teams battled it out for top honours at The Telegraph Cup Badminton 2018 for Corporates, presented by The Saturday Club last month. Three trophies were up for grabs, and after the preliminary matches, the top four teams clashed for the Gold Cup. The next four went after the Silver Plate, and the last six vied for the Bronze Bowl. After eight days of pulsating on-court action, it all came down to the final day, which saw two first-time finalists in Air India and Realtech Nirman take on each other to earn the right of being called champions. Capgemini and defending champions Nicco completed the top four.
Gold Cup: Winner
Realtech Nirman bounced back against Air India in the best-of-three Gold Cup final to take home the glittering trophy. Having won the first match 21-15 22-20, Air India were simply outclassed thereafter, as Realtech Nirman — led by Tonmoy Roy (fifth from right) — raced through the next two matches 21-7 21-7 and 21-14 21-8, winning the final 2-1. Last year’s Most Promising Team certainly lived up to that promise.
Gold Cup: Runner-up
Sports convener Harjyoti Bindra handed over the Gold Cup runner-up trophy to Air India, who were led by Somnath Ghosh (fourth from right).
Silver Plate: Winner
Sushanta Sengupta (third from left) was full of running and exhibited some great defence as his 6 Ballygunge Place team overpowered IBM Yellow 2-0. They also won the Loudest Team award, thanks to their vociferousness, both on and off the court.
Silver Plate: Runner-up
IBM Yellow, captained by Subhajit Mukherjee (far right), had to be content with second place in the Silver Plate contest.
Bronze Bowl: Winner
Like Realtech, Tata Steel also fought back from being a match down in the Bronze Bowl final, edging TCS in a tightly contested second match and riding that momentum to win it 2-1. Led by Amit Bhartia (third from right), the Steelers received their trophy from Vinesh Hira, joint convener, sports.
Captain Adhirath Ghosh (far right) and the rest of the TCS team with the runner-up bowl.
Somnath Singh of Realtech Nirman received the Best Player trophy from club vice-president Jagpal Singh. Somnath was dominant in the decider, covering the court with ease and squashing Air India’s hopes with his superb racket work.
Raunak Maity of Realtech Nirman won the Most Promising Player award.
Rahul Tipnis (front) and Bhushan Paithankar of Air India won the Best Doubles Pair award. Their excellent teamwork was on display in the opening match of the Gold Cup final, when they had cruised to 16-6 in the first game, eventually winning it 21-15. The second game of that match was a tense affair, but Rahul kept his cool towards the end and reeled off three back-to-back smashes to pocket the game 22-20 and the match.
