A PHD IS FOR ACADEMICS

I am a third-year student of BSc in microbiology. In order to get a good job, should I opt for an MBA, MSc, PhD or a post doctorate degree? My parents don’t want me to go for a doctorate as this can take several years. What are the job opportunities after a PhD?

An MSc followed by a PhD is an ideal qualification to join research and academics. Several new universities are coming up across the country and there’s a huge shortage of faculty members. Also, a PhD is less like studying and more like a job where you earn a stipend. To do a PhD you need to display independence, self-motivation and a high level of analytical and writing skills for a dissertation, which is a significant part of the programme. A large number of students choose a career in academics after a PhD as it provides a stable and intellectually stimulating environment. You can also join the research and development wing of a company, or go into consulting. On the other hand, an MBA will lead you to the private sector. If you have not enjoyed studying science, an MBA can be a good option.

DROPPING A YEAR

I am a student of Plus Two (science), all set to appear in the board exams and engineering entrance exams. However, I am not at all prepared as I have almost drawn a blank in Class XI. My father says that if I appear for the exams next year, the gap will affect my career.

Before deciding on the gap year, you need to critically analyse, with the assistance of your teachers, whether a year of hard work will transform your results substantially. If you have always performed well and the lag in Class XI was an anomaly, there is no harm in taking a gap year. Do not base the decision to take a gap year on what employers will perceive but on whether you can remain focused and motivated to slog during the extra year. During the interview you could always project your gap year as reflecting your willingness to commit to your dreams. Contemporary employers also give weightage to academic performance, soft skills and any internship or work experience.
