DESIGNER ARCHANA KOCHHAR LOVES TO MATCH HER OUTFITS WITH BOLD ACCESSORIES PHOTOGRAPHS BY GAJANAN DUDHALKAR Published 15.02.09, 12:00 AM

Style according to you is…

Style has to come naturally and cannot be forced. It is inherent in every individual.

Five items in your closet that you can’t do without

Loads of cocktail rings, earrings, perfumes, cosmetics and sunglasses.

Most extravagant buy

My new store in Juhu, Mumbai, that cost me a bomb.

What do you like to mix and match?

I love to team my outfits with matching accessories like a neat pair of shoes with a good bag and chunky jewellery.

What kind of a shopper are you?

I only shop on holidays abroad because I feel that a holiday is incomplete without splurging. Both my husband and I love to shop whenever we travel overseas.

Your favourite shopping destination

I love shopping for clothes and accessories in London and not just from high-end stores but also from small boutiques.

You have a fetish for

I love unusually shaped rings which range from chunky pieces to small ones.

Favourite accessories

I am an out-and-out accessory person and am obsessed with medium-sized earrings.

Latest buys

A red Cartier bag that I picked up in the US.

The trend that you are sporting at the moment

Right now, I am into wearing (and designing) jewelled tunics.

If there was a fire, what would you save?

I will save my husband Rajeev and my nine-year-old daughter, Simran.

Indian designers whose creations you love wearing

I love the workmanship of Tarun Tahiliani’s garments that are classy as well as Pallavi Jaikishan’s saris with their rose detailing.

At a party, you’d be seen wearing

A nice outfit matched with a good piece of jewellery and subtle make-up.

Stranded on an island, your uniform would be…

Eve-inspired clothing with loads of leaves on them.

Which filmstar would you like to dress as?

Greta Garbo because she had a regal taste and an awesome personality.

Did you ever go through any wild fashion phase?

I once coloured my hair blonde and brown for Holi. But on the day of Holi, my husband generously upturned three packets of gulal in my hair, which after washing turned into a horrible shade of green.

You have a nose for?

Perfumes with distinctly floral scents.

Biggest fashion faux pas…

I once wore a skirt that didn’t suit me at all — and the next day my picture at that event was in the newspapers.

One aspect of fashion that bugs you the most…

The obsession with uncomfortable high-heel shoes.

If you could change any one of your features, what would it be?

I would definitely want to knock off some extra pounds.

A fashion tip...

A few actually: I always tell young girls to experiment with flirty saris that have the flounce of ball gowns. One should wear dresses teamed with tight chudidars. One should experiment with the colour palette and go for shades like aubergine and yellow which are very hot right now. It’s good to have make-up on and one should take time out to do one’s own make-up.
