Being a music composer, my work schedules invariably stretch to include the weekends as well. On Saturdays, I’m up by eight and spend some time catching up with my writing ? be it penning scores or lyrics. After this, I generally head for the studio, where I spend the next few hours recording scores for films or even ad jingles. If it’s the former, things tend to wrap up faster, but advertising projects tend to take up a lot more time as the schedules are fraught with deadlines and hence very demanding.
Through all this though, the one person who always remains at the back of my mind is my son Boogie. Being the weekend, I know spending time with him should be top priority and I try my level best to make it so. As soon as I finish up in the studio, which is usually by half-past five, I spend the rest of the evening with my son. I adore being with him, taking him to the park or for ice cream, or even just playing with him at home. My pet dog Chhotu too, is always part of the proceedings.
Later in the evening, once Boogie goes to bed, I spend time with myself mulling over new ideas and projects, listening to music or reading new books. I’m a great admirer of the works of Shirshendu Mukherjee and Shakti Chattopadhyay ? I can read their books over and over again. I also enjoy watching old Bengali films. But I’d never venture out to a theatre unless I hear from a reliable source that the movie showing there is really good. In any case, today’s modern multiplexes aren’t my cup of tea ? give me the old-world charm of halls like Priya any day!
On Sundays, I like waking up late and then devouring the newspapers in lazy detail. Lunch, depending on my mood, is at home or at a restaurant and the rest of the day passes once again, with Boogie and Chhotu by my side.
