According to Kofi Annan, former secretary-general of the UN it is “perhaps the single most successful international agreement to date”. A protocol to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, the Montreal Protocol was signed on this day, 25 years ago. This treaty bans the production of CFCs, halons and other ozone-depleting chemicals. To commemorate this date, every year, September 16 is celebrated as International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The ozone layer is a thin shield that envelopes Earth and filters and screens all harmful ultraviolet rays. India adopted the Protocol in June 1992, and the work for ozone protection and implementation of the Protocol lies with the ministry of environment and forests. Let us take a pledge today to do our bit to preserve the ozone layer, be it by buying CFC-free products or using our vehicles less.
