Tapers, votives, pillars, tealights, floating, liturgical, novelty, birthday...found the connection? These are all different kinds of candles. Happy Diwali. The story goes that the earliest candles were made over 2000 years ago in China from — no, not wax — but, whale fat. After the sun, the candle became the new app (in today’s terminology) to tell time: the ones designed for this purpose might have had time measurements, usually in hours, marked along the wax. Stay safe as you light the candles this Diwali and spare a thought for the chandlers (candle-makers) who make them.
