Awareness and knowledge can go a long way in knowing your rights as a woman. The session Decode Law 4 Women, organised by YFLO Calcutta, drove home that point. Pinky Anand, additional solicitor general of India, was the guest speaker and turned the spotlight on women’s rights and laws. Glimpses…

“Law is a very pervasive institution, line, thought, narrative, because it pervades all fields, whether it’s business, entrepreneurship, science or psychology. In the field of gender discrimination, the judiciary, the courts and the justice system have worked in very deep and progressive roles that have transformed and to date is continuing to transform the position,” said Pinky Anand, before dwelling on issues such as domestic abuse, marriage annulment, child custody and dowry. Her top tip? “Education” can empower women. Anand also read out excerpts from her book, Trials of Truth: India’s Landmark Criminal Cases, which covers cases from over three decades including some high-profile ones like the K.M. Nanavati murder case.

The interactive session was moderated by lawyers Nandini Khaitan (left) and Saudamini Sharma.
“As women, we are quite unaware of our rights. We don’t know how to deal with situations. We don’t know the correct laws and only believe what has been told to us by our elders or society. And in order to clear the myths, there couldn’t have been anybody better than Pinky Anand,” said YFLO chairperson Shilpi Choudhary.
