(Clockwise from top) While the show boasted variety, the large flowering chrysanthemums were undoubtedly the pick of the day, with colours ranging from white to purple. The dahlias in shades of yellow and pink were close behind as were the roses which impressed with their vibrant hues as well as fragrance.
Parveen Hirji (left) and Ute Mukherjee loved the blooms. “Look at them, they are as big as my face,” laughed Parveen, a social worker. “My husband is a Bengali. It’s so pretty here that I keep coming back,” said Ute, who hails from Germany.
Sisters Riddhima and Pranika Chandak upped the cuteness quotient in their colourful winter wear. “We felt so close to nature. We will come back every year,” said Riddhima, who donned a colourful cap.

Everyone stopped by Raja Sanyal’s roses. The man behind the blooms held a crash course in petal power:

1. The soil should be porous.
2. The leaves must be watered properly for better photosynthesis.
3. Rose plants grow better in the cold. Hence, put some ice in the soil.
4. Ten hours of regular sunlight is mandatory.
5. The leaves must be pruned only after the rainy season.
