Choosing the right foundation may sound easy, but don’t be rash. Spend time over it and be careful that you do it during the day. Deepti Mohinder of Studio Meche explains how the right shade should be chosen.

“There are lots of theories when it comes to selecting the right shade of foundation, but there nothing better than your skin colour,” she says.

A shade lighter would make you look fairer, but it can turn grey in a couple of minutes of application. So what is the right way?

STEP 1

The skin on your face is completely different from other parts of the body. “So drop the ancient method of testing the foundation on the skin on your wrist,” says Mohinder. The right way is to apply a swatch on your jawline on one side with the colour you think would match your skintone perfectly.

On the other jawline, apply a shade lighter. Blend the products with downward strokes so that the neck area is covered as well.

STEP2

“Remember to carry a pocket mirror and it should be daytime,” Mohinder stresses. Colours in natural light are more prominent and it is easier to judge which colour matches skintones better. If no product is visible, hurrah! It means the product is perfectly blended and you have found your shade.

Never apply the foundation for test on your entire face as it may confuse you. Never compromise till your are absolutely satisfied that you have found your shade.
