Calcutta, May 30 :
Bata India is repositioning its Power brand of shoes and apparels to sharpen focus and consolidate its best-selling products.
In the apparel segment, the company plans to restrict the presence of the brand to sports-related accessories, like T-shirts, track-suits, kit bags and shoe polish, rather than maintain a sprawling array from jeanswear to formal shirts.
Along with the repositioning of the Power shoe brand, which has a 25 per cent market share in the sports shoe market, Bata is also expanding its Sandals range, withdrawing from the premium Golf shoe segment while deciding to maintain a low profile in the tennis shoe segment.
Sources said Bata plans to introduce around four more designs of its Sandals range within a month. This brand is now available in seven designs under three categories ? Beach, Reflex and Flight.
The sources said: ?The Sandals range, which costs between Rs 200 and Rs 500, is highly popular among teenagers and is the fastest growing footwear brand.?
?At present, the market for sandals is dominated by the unorganised sector and cheap imports and Bata plans to make a headway here, particularly in the Rs 200- 300 range,? the sources added. The Sandals are manufactured at the company?s facilities in Batanagar.
The company has already stopped production of Golf shoes, priced between Rs 800 and Rs 2000, due to lack of retail customers.
Officials said these shoes are bought by players in overseas markets and from the sports outlets in golf clubs.
The narrow customer base makes the production of these premium shoes, which require special imported soles, uneconomic.
Bata will also maintain a low-profile in the tennis shoe segment by making shoes only for amateur players. However, there are plans to market Lotto shoes from August.
?The company has decided not to sell Nike tennis shoes for professionals. It has marketing arrangements with the US shoe giant. Besides, Lotto will introduce cheaper shoes in August to be sold through Bata outlets,? the sources said.
Bata India has tied up with Nike and Lotto to market their products in India.
Bata is Lotto?s sole marketing agent but Nike has other franchisees.
The Jogger brands, priced between Rs 400 and Rs 700, have been the largest selling brand in the Power range. The brand has maintained a steady growth rate in the sports shoe market.
?The company?s aim is to keep its focus intact on these brands,? the sources said. Priced at Rs 250, Power Canvass is now available in only one design but enjoys a steady market share.
