A youth died on Wednesday when a bomb hit him on the head during a clash over land in Kulpi, South 24-Parganas.

Alimuddin Paik, 29, died instantly. He was reportedly a close aide to one Nizamuddin Paik, with whom Trinamul worker Asmat Paik clashed over the ownership of a plot.

Police and local sources said that on Wednesday morning, goons led by Asmat attacked Nizamuddin and his workers on the disputed land.

The goons hurled bombs, sources said. “Two bombs hit Alimuddin and Nizamuddin. Alimuddin died and Nizamuddin was rushed to Diamond Harbour District hospital in a critical condition,” a neighbour said.

Police have detained three persons for interrogation.

Senior officials of the Diamond Harbour police district, including superintendent of police Bhaskar Mukhopadhyay, rushed to the spot.

Villagers alleged that Asmat, a known Trinamul worker, stockpiled bombs in the past but police did nothing.

A senior police officer of Kulpi police station refuted the allegations. “Several raids have been held in the area and bombs unearthed. These goons organised a fresh initiative.”
