A tutor has been arrested for allegedly duping a couple in Bhowanipore of Rs 9 lakh by promising to get their daughter admitted to a reputable English-medium school and the her mother a teaching job at the institution.

Shantanu Guha, 38, is a graduate from a prominent south Calcutta college and a masters in mathematics, said police.

Around a year ago, he had introduced himself to Shubhabrata Roy’s family as Rajiv Roy and claimed he was a visiting lecturer at a private institute. He used to teach the Roys’ daughter.

After a few months, Guha offered to get the Class X student admitted to a prominent English-medium school in south Calcutta.

“He started taking money in instalments, claiming it was needed to fix the admission, as it was difficult to get an external candidate admitted to Class X,” the officer said.

He also told the girl’s mother that she could start teaching at the same school. “He took more money to arrange this,” the officer added.

The family realised they had been duped when they found their daughter’s name was not on the admission merit list. By then, Guha had vanished. According to a complaint the Roys lodged with Bhowanipore police station in May, they were cheated of Rs 9 lakh.

A team from Lake police station arrested Guha from Rabindra Sarobar on Wednesday.

Investigations revealed Guha had used the Rajiv Roy alias to dupe people at least twice before. “He cheated people in Jadavpur, Bansdroni and Sonarpur,” the officer said.
