The Trinamul Congress’s Islampur MLA on Saturday “advised” Mamata Banerjee to consult elected representatives of her party before lauding the performance of the civil and police administration in any district.

Abdul Karim Chowdhury, a prominent face of the ruling party in North Dinajpur, came down heavily on the district magistrate and the superintendent of police district for allegedly furnishing wrong information to the chief minister.

Chowdhury, who was attending an event hosted in Islampur as part of “Banglar Gorbo Mamata” — a 75-day campaign recently launched by Trinamul — said: “It has come to my notice that in different districts the chief minister is praising the DMs and the SPs on the basis of information shared by the administration. I would advise the chief minister to consult MLAs and other elected representatives of the party before appreciating these officers.”

At an administrative review meeting in Kaliaganj on March 3, Chowdhury had been cut short by Mamata when he tried to raise some issues. The MLA said Mamata continued to praise the DM and the SP during the meeting.

“But these officials have misled the chief minister. She should have spoken to the MLAs and other elected representatives of the party to know the reality. In North Dinajpur, law and order is in a shambles and development work has come to a halt. I had tried to make certain points but the chief minister stopped me, citing paucity of time,” Chowdhury alleged.

He pointed out that he is an MLA of the ruling party and so he could not hit the streets to organise a movement against the district administration. “But considering the state of affairs, I have decided to raise these issues in the Assembly and will also launch a movement in the district,” he said.

Chowdhury, who joined Trinamul in 2008 from the Congress, won the Islampur Assembly seat in the 2011 elections and had been inducted into the cabinet. He, however, lost in 2016 and in February 2017 left Trinamul.

Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, he was inducted into the party and fielded in the Islampur Assembly bypoll, which he won.

Sections of Trinamul leader are unhappy with Chowdhury’s comments. The leaders feel that the MLA has acted against the party and hampered the Banglar Gorbo Mamata campaign.

Kanaialal Agarwala, the district Trinamul chief, said: “I don’t think the chief minister needs to seek the opinion of MLAs to assess the performance of an officer. We are sending details of what the MLA has said to the state leadership.”
