Art’s tribute to valour

The Telegraph Online Published 01.10.07, 12:00 AM
Art’s tribute to valour
Soul of Rajasthan presents the art of phad paintings from the state. Phad art is the depiction of the valour of folk-deities and heroes done on cloth. The marvellous imaging of the popular folklore in vibrant colours brings alive the age-old tales. Padma Shri Lal Joshi and his son Kalyan Joshi are part of this show. Lal Joshi comes from a family that has been involved in art for centuries now and the recognition of this form as part of the contemporary Indian scenario is entirely his achievement. He was also the first artist to introduce in phad art subjects like Maharana Pratap, Prithviraj Chauhan, Jauhar of Padmini, battle of Haldi- Ghati besides epical motifs Geet-Govind, Nal-Damyanti, Ramayan and Mahabharat, among others.
