Gyanwant Singh in his office after taking over as the commissioner of Bidhannagar City Police on Monday. Singh, a 1993 IPS officer, has been the deputy commissioner (headquarters), deputy commissioner (central), deputy commissioner (detective department) of Calcutta police and the superintendent of Murshidabad and South Dinajpur districts. He was removed from the post of deputy commissioner (headquarters) in 2007 in connection with the Rizwanur Rahman case. After serving in comparatively less important departments, Singh was brought back to mainstream policing in July 2014 as the deputy inspector general, Murshidabad range. He was later made the inspector general, north Bengal. (Mayukh Sengupta)
