Calcutta: The January 2018 issue of Prabuddha Bharata, the English journal of Ramakrishna Mission, will contain analyses of all aspects of The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, editor Swami Narasimhananda said on Thursday.

One reason for devoting the issue to the Gospel - the English translation of Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita - is to encourage readers to engage more with the text and have a deeper understanding of it.

Prabuddha Bharata or Awakened India, which comes out every month, was started by Swami Vivekananda in 1896.

" Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita is widely read and can be seen in the puja room of almost every household. Most people read the Kathamrita as a religious or spiritual text. But the text has some uniqueness. It is different from many other religious texts. In the January 2018 edition of the journal, we will cover in detail all aspects of the Kathamrita, something that was never done before," the monk told Metro on Thursday.

The Mission chose The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna as the theme of the January issue of the journal keeping in mind the present situation, he said.

Anyone who has read the book and understood it, the editor said, "can't be static and has to be dynamic".

"A person who has read The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna cannot hate any religion.... So, if you have these views and you say you have read the Gospel, then there is some contradiction... That is why we have made an attempt to provide an analysis of all aspects of the Gospel in the journal, so that when people read it they can understand the deeper meaning of the content."

The book has many "unique features" and a historical angle to it. For example, it refers to many important personalities of the Bengal renaissance.

"...Bankim Chandra, Iswar Chandra, Keshab Chandra, Derozio and... also the Brahma Samaj find mention in the Gospel," the swami said.

The special issue will also deal with the language and style of the book.

The January issues of Prabuddha Bharata are more voluminous than the rest.
