Senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya on Monday told the court of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha of Calcutta High Court that there were discrepancies in the preliminary report by the state-appointed special investigation team (SIT) probing the February 20 death of Left-leaning student leader Anis Khan.

Bhattacharya said it appeared from the report that the SIT initiated a case of unnatural death, not murder.

“Citing the context of the report of the polygraph test, investigators tried to establish that Anis died after falling from a high spot. The report did not investigate several issues, including the fact that two policemen from Amta police station went to his residence the day he died,” he said.

He claimed that the SIT had done an inquiry and not an investigation, and his client, Anis’s father Salem Khan, did not have faith in the SIT and wanted a CBI probe.

The SIT had submitted a preliminary investigation report in court on April 19. The judge had given Bhattacharya a copy for his client’s perusal.

On Monday, after hearing Bhattacharya, Justice Mantha told him to file an affidavit by May 2 with details of grievances on the SIT probe. The case will be heard on May 2.

Suvendu petition

Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and four BJP MLAs on Monday sought a stay on the decision of Speaker Biman Banerjee to suspend them for the “rest of the session” for allegedly violating the rules of the House on March 31. Advocate-general S.N. Mukherjee wanted time till May 3 to file his affidavit. The judge granted the prayer and fixed the hearing of the case on May 5.
