June 11: The CID today morning conducted a raid in a Behala office that functioned as an institute of alternative medicine and sealed it for allegedly issuing fake MBBS certificates.
Several documents, including fake MBBS certificates, were found in the ground-floor office, said a CID officer.
The sleuths were told about the office by those who have been arrested recently for practising allopathic medicine without an MBBS.
Over the past fortnight, the CID has arrested eight "fake" doctors and at least 60 others are now under its scanner.
On Friday night, the investigating agency had sealed three offices in the Bowbazar, College Street and Chowringhee areas on the same charge.
According to CID, the Institute of Health Science Council of Alternative System of Medicine on Biren Roy Road in Behala was set up more than nine months ago.
"Such units came under our scanner after the arrests of fake doctors. Some of these fake doctors had completed courses in Unani and other fields of alternative medicines while others never pursued any medical course," said a CID officer.
Investigators came to know about the Behala office while probing where the accused had procured their fake MBBS certificates.
Santosh Pandey, the owner of the two-storeyed building that houses the office, told the police that a man who identified himself as Tapas Biswas had rented the ground-floor room. "Pandey said he had no idea what was going on in the room except that many people used to visit it regularly. Biswas is absconding and we are conducting raids to get him," said a CID officer.
The CID unearthed the fake doctors' racket after arresting a person last month who was attached with the state government's rural health centre in Jalpaiguri.
