The storm-ravaged Mela Bari in Serampore. Built by Khetra Mohan Saha over 200 years ago, Mela Bari has been the venue of a 125-year-old fair. The façade of the house gave way around 2pm, said Gautam Saha, one of the descendants of Khetra Mohan Saha. There was no casualty, he added.

The road named after Carey, which runs along the Hooghly, has seen several trees felled by the storm. Some of the felled trees are giant banyans that have been standing on the road for close to 100 years, said old timers.

The casualties included mahagony, gulmohar and krishnachura trees. Barring some smashed windows, the imposing college building with Corinthian columns did not suffer much damage, said an official.
