Calcutta University will introduce integrated MSc-PhD courses in biological, physical and chemical sciences in collaboration with three reputable city-based research institutes.
The centres that will partner the university are the SN Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Indian Association for Cultivation of Science and Bose Institute.
The courses will be offered in the new academic session starting August.
The students will pursue their courses at the respective partner institute while the degrees will be awarded by the university.
The university, however, will play a key role in running the courses as it will frame the syllabus and monitor the performance of the students.
“The responsibility for preparing the syllabi of the masters part of the courses will rest with the university. Since the three institutes are research organisations, they do not have the resources or expertise to conduct postgraduate exams,” said a university official.
The admissions will be controlled by the partner institutes.
“The institutes will decide on the admission process. Students from all over the country can apply for the courses,” the official said.
“The concept is new. The students who will study the courses will be benefitted as the institutes, being engaged in research, have better libraries, laboratories and faculty members,” said Dhrubojyoti Chatterjee, the pro vice-chancellor (academic affairs) at the university.
“The university’s syndicate has approved the decision and memoranda of understanding have been signed with the three institutes.”
The MSc-PhD course in chemical sciences will be taught at the Indian Association for Cultivation of Science. The courses in physical and biological sciences will be taught at the SN Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences and Bose Institute, respectively.
