CPM leader held for ‘brick hurl’

Harun Al Rashid's arrest was made on a complaint filed by Ahamad's wife, Tazkera Biwi, also a Trinamul leader

A CPM leader from Murshidabad’s Samserganj block was arrested late on Saturday in connection with the injury of Trinamul leader Nasiruddin Ahamad.

Ahamad was part of a survey team led by irrigation and waterways minister Sabina Yeasmin in erosion-hit Pratapganj village, when his head was hit by a brick allegedly hurled by CPM leader Harun Al Rashid, 45. Jangipur police arrested Harun.

His arrest was made on a complaint filed by Ahamad's wife, Tazkera Biwi, also a Trinamul leader.

“We have made one arrest on the basis of the complaint … 20 others have been named in the same complaint, and a search is on for them as well," said SP Bholanath Pandey.

Ahamad's injuries necessitated 12 stitches to the head. Sources said he was on his way to recovery as of Sunday.Police arrested Harun under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 325 (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the IPC.He was produced in the Jangipur additional chief judicial magistrate's court on Sunday and sent to jail custody for 14 days.

Trinamul workers led by Samserganj MLA Amirul Islam led a protest at the Kankuria gram panchayat maidan on Sunday afternoon, where Islam continued his invective on Saturday in which he had suspected the local CPM dispensation to have been behind the attack on Ahamad.
