Tiger strikes at man

Cooch Behar, Nov. 24: Rajkumar Sanyasi (70) was injured after a circus tiger took a swipe at him when he came too close to its cage this morning. He has been admitted to hospital.

“The circus, which had rolled up its tents yesterday, was preparing to leave. One of the trailers, to which the cages of the animals were harnessed, was parked near the road. The animals drew curious onlookers and as the crowd swelled, a restless tiger hit out at Sanyasi when he came too close to the cage,” a police official said.


Actor singed

Balurghat: Actor Santana Bose suffered minor burn injures after the anchal of her saree caught fire during the shooting of a television serial. The others at the site immediately took her to Balurghat hospital. She was released after being administered first aid.


Suicide

Balurghat: Milan Ghosh (17), a resident of Hili, committed suicide by hanging himself in his room. Family members said they did not know what prompted the teenager to take his life.


Man arrested

Islampur: The Border Security Force (BSF) arrested a Bangladesh national on Monday when he was trying sneak back into the neighbouring country. BSF sources said, 27-year-old Abdul Mahajid, a resident of Baliadangi village in Thakurganj district in Bangladesh, was trying to cross the border when a BSF patrol spotted and arrested him. Mahajid said he had illegally entered India a year ago and had stayed in Delhi in search of a job.


Memorandum

Siliguri: The West Bengal Pradesh Congress committee has urged Union labour minister Saheb Singh Verma to bail out the tea industry in north Bengal. In a memorandum faxed to the minister on Monday the Pradesh Youth Congress has requested the Union minister to visit the tea growing areas of north Bengal to see the plight of the workers.


Art workshop

Siliguri: North Bengal Art Academy will organise a three-hour open-air art workshop at Venus More on Tuesday. The theme of the workshop will be “Siliguri”.
