Apple Vision Pro, the spatial computing headset, is getting its first full-length immersive film — Bono: Stories of Surrender, a concert-style “documentary event”. But wipe those tears, it will also be available on Apple TV+.
Based on his memoir, it uses 180-degree video capture in 8K resolution, aiming to create a detailed visual experience. Apple’s Spatial Audio technology is also used, making sounds appear to come from specific points around the listener to increase the feeling that you are there during the performance.
The film has been in the making for sometime. During the pandemic, Bono spent time with U2 member The Edge, reworking and re-recording a catalogue of the band’s greatest hits for an album titled Songs of Surrender, which was released in March 2023. The 40-track LP was accompanied by a documentary titled Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, as well as Bono’s memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.
The singer continues his journey in Bono: Stories of Surrender. The Apple documentary, directed in black-and-white by Andrew Dominik and it will have its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival later this month.
Apple has said in a statement: “[Bono] pulls back the curtain on a remarkable life and the family, friends, and faith that have challenged and sustained him, revealing personal stories about his journey as a son, father, husband, activist and rockstar. Along with never-before-seen, exclusive footage from the Beacon Theatre shows, the film features Bono performing many of the iconic U2 songs that have shaped his life and legacy.”
Bono: Stories of Surrender will arrive on Apple TV+ on May 30 and simultaneously be available in Apple Immersive Video for Vision Pro users. An abridged and updated edition of Bono’s memoir will be released in conjunction with the documentary.
