Apple has refreshed its premium over-ear headphones with the announcement of AirPods Max 2, bringing upgraded noise cancellation, improved sound processing, and a suite of software-driven features powered by Apple’s H2 chip.
The second-generation model retains the distinctive design of the original AirPods Max but introduces a range of refinements aimed at both everyday listeners and professional creators. Apple says the new headphones offer stronger Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), improved audio fidelity, and a number of intelligent features that adapt to how users listen and communicate.
AirPods Max 2 will be available to order starting March 25, with retail availability beginning early next month. The headphones will be offered in midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.
A key upgrade comes in the form of Apple’s H2 chip, which powers new computational audio algorithms. According to Apple, this allows the new AirPods Max to deliver noise cancellation that is up to 1.5 times more effective than the previous generation.
The improved ANC aims to reduce environmental sounds such as aircraft engines or commuter trains, allowing users to focus on music, calls, or work. Apple has also updated the digital signal processing behind Transparency mode so that outside sounds feel more natural while remaining audible.
Alongside the noise cancellation improvements, Apple has introduced a high dynamic range amplifier designed to deliver cleaner audio while maintaining the sound signature associated with the AirPods Max line.
Spatial Audio also sees improvements, with Apple claiming more accurate instrument localisation, better bass consistency, and more natural mid and high frequencies.
When connected with a USB-C cable, the headphones support 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio, which Apple says enables higher-quality playback across music, films, and games. The wired connection also enables ultra-low latency audio, which could benefit musicians and producers working with apps such as Logic Pro.
Apple says AirPods Max 2 can also be used to create and mix music in Personalised Spatial Audio with head tracking when connected via USB-C.
The H2 chip also enables several new software features designed to adjust the listening experience dynamically.
Adaptive Audio automatically balances noise cancellation and transparency depending on the user’s surroundings. Conversation Awareness lowers audio playback and reduces background noise when the wearer begins speaking to someone nearby.
A new Live Translation feature, powered by Apple Intelligence, aims to assist with real-time communication across languages during in-person conversations.
For calls, Voice Isolation prioritises the user’s voice while suppressing surrounding noise. Meanwhile, Personalised Volume learns a user’s listening preferences over time and adjusts audio levels accordingly.
Apple has also introduced gesture-based Siri interactions, allowing users to respond to Siri prompts by nodding or shaking their head.
Beyond listening, Apple is positioning the headphones as a tool for content creation. AirPods Max 2 include studio-quality audio recording, intended for podcasters, interviewers, musicians, and other creators who want clearer vocal capture.
Another addition is camera remote functionality. By pressing the Digital Crown, users can take photos or start and stop video recordings on an iPhone or iPad from a distance.
Lower wireless latency is also expected to improve responsiveness for gaming when using Game Mode on iOS, macOS, or iPadOS.
Apple says the updated headphones also reflect the company’s broader environmental goals. The magnets inside AirPods Max 2 use 100 percent recycled rare earth elements, while the ear cushions contain 100 percent recycled polyester.
Apple-designed circuit boards use recycled gold plating and tin solder, and the packaging is made entirely from fibre-based materials that are designed to be recyclable.
You can order AirPods Max 2 starting March 25. They will reach customers, and will be in Apple Store locations, beginning early next month. AirPods Max 2 start at ₹67,900.
