Joruri!!! (Emergency!!!) on her mind, Mamata Banerjee took to social media to tweet a poem and her rendition of a Rabindranath Tagore song on the synthesiser on Wednesday evening, hours before the start of counting.

The poem, titled Joruri!!!, does not take names but says “democracy is in a cave”, days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi meditated in a cave in Kedarnath. The song Mamata played on the keyboard was Praano bhoriye trisha horiye. The lyrics are a prayer to the divinity, referred to as “Probhu (Lord)”, for filling one’s life, quenching one’s thirst with more life, light, melody, pain and consciousness, and to free one from bounds such as home. “As counting day approaches, I pray for my motherland. This song is dedicated to Maa Mati Manush,” Mamata wrote and posted the video of her playing the synthesiser.

Joruri!!!

Shobtai joruri -

Kichhu kotha chhilo,

Otao joruri.

Modhyo raate shiddhanto -

Otao joruri.

Villain-er maathey ei khyala -

Tateo joruri.

Bichaare biddhosto -

Otao joruri.

Gonotontro guhaay -

Otao joruri.

Protibaad korbe?

Na hujoor - joruri.

Matha khutey knado

Osruteo joruri.

Ki dekhle nirbachon?

Nirbashoneo ki joruri?

Emergency!!!

Everything is an emergency -

There were some things to be said,

That too is an emergency.

A decision at midnight -

That too is an emergency.

This game is in the villain’s field -

There too is an emergency.

Devastated by justice -

That too is an emergency.

Democracy is in a cave --

That too is an emergency.

Will you protest?

No sire - emergency.

Then bang your head and weep

In tears too is an emergency.

What did you see this election?

Is exile an emergency too?
