Jamshedpur showed its cosmopolitan character as guests made a beeline to see patachitras and sand art depicting the Jagannath temple of Puri at Utkal Utsav on Sunday.

Organised by Utkal Mahila Samiti in association with Utkal Association, Golmuri Utkal Samaj and Utkal Bandhav Samiti, the show at XLRI’s Tata auditorium aimed to promote the art and culture of Odisha.

The day started with cultural programmes. Six kiosks were also set up at the venue to display dokra items, junk jewellery and pipli art. Three were dedicated to patachitra art.

The second half of the day saw some fantastic dance performances. While Prince Dance Group of India’s Got Talent fame enthralled the audience with innovative steps, folk dancers performed gotipua.

Odissi cannot be given a miss if it’s the culture of Odisha on display. The classical dance joined hands with contemporary styles like locking and popping to present a peppy fusion.

“This was an initiative to introduce Jamshedpur to Odisha,” said T.C. Mohanty, general secretary of Utkal Association.
