Calcutta: The Champions League T20 (CLT20) seems to have run its course. The annual international tournament, featuring the top T20 teams of various leagues, failed to replicate the kind of popularity that domestic T20 leagues like the IPL has generated. And now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to end it and is looking for alternatives.
"Yes, we will not continue with the CLT20. It was really not gaining popularity," confirmed Jagmohan Dalmiya, the BCCI president. He, however, did not elaborate on the future plans. "We are looking at alternatives. We are planning a mini-IPL style tournament. But it will take a week or more for all the stakeholders to come back with their responses.
"Only then we can look at finalising a plan. It is also still very early to say anything," he added.
The UAE is being considered as a possible venue, though it is nowhere near being finalised.
According to sources, since its inception in 2009, TV ratings of CLT20 have dipped considerably.
