Guwahati, May 26: The Assam PCC today finalised the list of its candidates for 31 wards and 90 area sabhas for elections to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) scheduled to be held on June 19.

Dissatisfaction, however, brews among a group of PCC members for giving nominations to Ashima Bordoloi, daughter of Gauhati East MLA Robin Bordoloi and Nilakshi Talukdar, wife of Gauhati West MLA Hemanta Talukdar.

The disgruntled Congress workers alleged “family-centred politics”, but their complaints were brushed aside by PCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita who said to be a family member of a politician cannot be a ground for disqualification of a person from joining politics.

The Congress workers demonstrated in front of Bordoloi’s house for two consecutive days, protesting Ashima’s nomination.

There were reports that Bordoloi, who is currently holding the post of chairman of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), wants to see his daughter as GMC mayor.

Talking to reporters here this evening, Kalita said: “Family members of politicians going for politics is not new. If somebody is eligible then to be a family member of a politician cannot be a ground for his or her disqualification from joining politics.”

For the past few weeks, hectic efforts are on by Congress workers to get nominations for councillors’ posts. There were even allegations of demanding money to get nominations.

Kalita, however, denied the allegations saying the PCC would take action if somebody can substantiate the charges. .

Tomorrow is the last day of submitting nominations for the election. Kamrup deputy commissioner and returning officer Ashutosh Agnihotri has made elaborate arrange-ments for smooth submission of nomination papers.

Considering the huge number of candidates going for submission of nomination papers, altogether nine counters will be opened on the premises of Kamrup DC’s office.

“The candidates and proposers will have to collect coupons before 3pm from specified counters and will submit nomination papers to the assistant returning officer. Nomination papers will have to be submitted from 11am to 3pm. No nomination paper will be accepted after 3pm,” a notification issued from the election branch of Kamrup DC office said.

The nomination papers will be scrutinised at 11am on May 29. Candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations before 3pm on June 1. Polling will be held from 7am to 4pm on June 19.
