Guwahati: Assam police on Saturday submitted a 46-page chargesheet against 48 accused along with 798 pages of supporting documents in a case related to lynching of two youths from Guwahati by a mob in Karbi Anglong district on June 8.
Director-general of police, Kuladhar Saikia told reporters here that the chargesheets were submitted in the court of chief judicial magistrate, Karbi Anglong at Diphu with the accused mainly being charged with murder, wrongful restraint, mischief, unlawful assembly and rioting, under sections of the IPC.
"We can't divulge the contents of the chargesheet. All we can say now is that it has sufficient documents including forensic reports that will help in their conviction in court. This is significant as we have been able to submit the chargesheet of the crime committed by so many people before the stipulated 90 days time," Saikia said.
On June 8 evening, Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das, hailing from here, were stopped at Panjuri village under Dokmoka police station where they had gone to see a waterfall. They were suspected to be child lifters, dragged out of their SUV and killed by the mob while some others video- recorded the shocking incident on their mobile phones. The video clips, which had gone viral soon after the incident, showed the two pleading for their lives saying they were Assamese and not child lifters from outside the state but that did not stop the mob.
"The chargesheets have clearly mentioned the role played by the accused: how some had directly attacked them, some pelted stones and stopped policemen who tried to stop them while others looked on. We have submitted names of 71 witnesses and documents as proof of their involvement in the crime," Saikia said.
The incident sent shockwaves while the state police faced much criticism for their alleged failure to reach the spot on time despite being informed by some local residents. The state government had set up a special investigation team to probe the case and ensure that the chargesheet was submitted on time.
When asked whether police would seek trial of the case in a fast track court as demanded by many, Saikia said, "We are taking steps to request the court for the same."
Bodh Gaya sexual abuse: Saikia said an additional superintendent of police had rushed to Karbi Anglong to assist the families of 15 minor boys, who were allegedly sexually abused by a Buddhist monk in Bihar's Bodh Gaya. Bihar police had arrested a monk on Wednesday following complaint by the victims. The boys study in a school-cum-meditation centre run by the accused Bhante Shanghpriya at Mastpura village under Bodh Gaya police station.
