Sept. 14: Altogether 10 science projects from eight city schools have been selected for the state-level National Children’s Science Congress in Lakhimpur from October 13 to 16.

The projects have been chosen from among the 53 exhibited at the district-level National Children’s Science Congress which was organised at Railway Higher Secondary School here recently.

Altogether 175 students from 20 schools of Kamrup (metro) participated in the congress, which was all about exploring skills and getting the students interested in science.

During the presentation, the participants were asked by a select group of experts to elaborate on their work, based on which the 10 projects were selected.

The projects selected are:

A Study on Land Resources of Historical Silguri Beel and A Study on the Medicinal Value of Soil of North Guwahati Girls’ HE School

Recycling of Earthen Lamps of Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Silpukhuri

Soil Preservation by Increasing Fertility of Soil and Effect of Acid Rain on Soil of Assam Jatiya Vidyalaya, Noonmati

Use of Plastic and Its Impact on Soil of GBN Academy

Land Use Pattern and Problems of Bamunimaidan of Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Rajgarh

A Study on Nagkata Pukhuri of Cotton Collegiate Government Higher Secondary School

Changing Pattern of the Use of Agricultural Land of New Guwahati Adarsha High School

Solid Waste Problem of Raj Bhavan and Gandhi Basti of Hindustani Kendriya Vidyalaya

“In our project on a study on the medicinal value of soil we asked people about the medicinal quality of soil and also approached Government Ayurvedic College, Guwahati,” said Violina Borah, one of the three-members of the group, from North Guwahati Girls’ HE School.

While Violina, a Class IX student, has done the project with her friends Aparajita Bordoloi and Bhanita Deka, the other project on land resources of historical Silguri Beel was completed by three Class VI students of the same school — Sangita Das, Chandini Baishya and Rojipriya Bharali.

“Only group leaders of the selected projects will participate in the state-level science congress. However, others members of selected groups will be awarded state-level certificates,” said the district co-ordinator of the National Science Congress, Kamrup, Tarun Deka.

The national-level science congress is held annually from December 27 to 31 in Delhi.

After a thorough scrutiny at the district and state levels, nearly 500 children will take part in the five-day National Science Congress.
