Why crochet is still crushing it... Here’s decoding the trend

Janis Joplin swore by it and now it reigns over the closets of the Hadids, Biebers and Kapoors. But what makes crochet so timeless?

The rise of the knitwear trend doesn’t really explain the popularity of crochet fashion. In case you still haven’t figured it out, the two crafts — peak cottagecore in their own right — are quite different from each other. While knitting needs two needles, crochet is done using one crochet hook which is used to knot and loop the yarn to create intricate patterns.

The return of crochet

The crochet trend made a strong comeback in the 2019 Spring runways as luxury labels like Chloe, Ulla Johnson and Michale Kors expanded upon the homespun look. The crochet’s relevance is still going strong in 2022 as old-school styling and slow-produced trends experienced a surge in the post-pandemic market.

Why is crochet still cool?

Crochet is hardly new and its adaptability may be the key to its ongoing relevance. While it has been used to make coasters and table mats (and even the polarising jug cover!) in every Bengali household, it’s easy to see why high fashion would deem it a worthy option, considering the rise in utilitarian fashion.

From bikini tops and clutch bags to bucket hats and totes, the crochet can fit into almost any fashion memo!

The crochet’s popularity also has a connection with the modern shopper’s love for slow fashion. Crochet is labour-intensive and can’t be authentically produced on a macro scale. It doesn’t just boast artisanal value but the trend also encourages and promotes ethical and upcycled production.

Crochet seems to have found its footing in everyday life as millennials and Gen Z realised the power of creative expression with this craft. Homegrown crochet artists and emerging labels are offering Pinterest fits and offering buyer-friendly customisations. Here are the Instagram labels that can fulfill your crochet needs this season:

Lemoncello

Priyanka Mukherjee’s slow fashion label can make all your Mediterranean beach fantasies come true! The designer started her brand in 2021 with a focus on body-positivity. Having been raised in a small town where women were shamed constantly, her brand philosophy is centred on breaking the shackles of moral policing.

“If I had stumbled upon a modern crochet store while growing up in India, I'd have been delighted! Therefore trying to cater to that segment of shoppers who appreciate conscious and sophisticated differentials which don't burn a hole in the ozone layer (and of course your pocket),” the designer shared.

The Crochetery by Harshini Ramesh
