Arthshila Santiniketan is hosting an exhibition titled “Peripheral Visions: Journeys of Migration and Belonging” between March 18 and April 29, 2023.
Curated by Tenzing Sedonla Ukyab Lama and Abeer Gupta the exhibition offers an interesting glimpse through a critical lens to reveal the gaze of the periphery and the many perspectives shaped by migration and belonging.
About the exhibition
With roots in representation politics and cultural heritage conservation, the works on display inspire a re-imagination of identity and call for a rethinking of the narratives that shape our world view. It is also a unique initiative that amalgamates the vast and varied visions of artists from the Trans-Himalayan region to bring forth the intricate interplay of identity and the landscapes.
About the curators
Born in Nepal, Tenzing Sedonla Ukyab Lama is an art history and public relations graduate from the State University of New York at New Paltz and has a family background in antiquities that has fuelled her interest in Himalayan Art. This has also led her to work with various creative communities and the School of Design, Ambedkar University, Delhi. She teaches courses in research methods and aesthetics to post-graduate students of social design. A graduate from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, she has studied visual anthropology at organizations such as Rubin Museum of Art, Tibet Museum, Machik and various collectives/art studios in Lhasa. She has also co-founded Zeeba Space which is an online art initiative that highlights perspectives on art and culture.

Wordpress.comHer associate for the exhibition - Abeer Gupta has been working extensively in Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, with oral histories, material cultures and visual archives. Gupta strives to create an intersection between a given ethnographic collection and the community it belongs to, at a point where the community itself has shifted to an alternate location or is scattered across numerous locations.

khojstudio.orgThe exhibition at Arthshila Santiniketan, Shyambati, Bolpur will be open from 11 am to 7 pm on all days except on Mondays and public holidays. Along with the curators, artists Subas Tamang from Nepal and Zahara Batool from Ladakh interacted with the students. Award-winning films from the Himalayan terrain have also been screened as a part of the Friday Film Screenings of the establishment.
Speaking about the exhibition, Ruchira Das, Artistic Director, Arthshila said, “This is probably an important time to reflect on perspectives shaped by migration and belonging and I am delighted that we are able to host this exhibition at Arthshila Santiniketan where many of our audience members are students from different parts of the country.”
An initiative of Takshila Educational Society, Arthshila currently works out of its four signature locations namely Ahmedabad, Santiniketan, Patna and New Delhi and is an immersive platform for creating and sharing ideas centred on the arts with spaces designed to facilitate artistic expression and curate creative experiences.
