Nandanik Manipuri Dance Academy presented Jagoi Pareng, an evening of Manipuri dance to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the institution on July 21 at Gyan Manch. Manipur is famous for its ethereal Raasleelas.

Directed by Poushali Chatterjee, a senior disciple of Guru Bipin Singh and a brilliant dancer herself, the programme commenced with Vasanta Raas, one of the five Raasleelas of Manipur. Sakshat Darshan, a solo presentation by Poushali was based on the 64 divisions of shringar where she portrayed various emotional nuances of vipralambha shringar. Presenting this traditional number with a sound knowledge of technique and creative brilliance, the artiste established an innovative interpretation of Manipuri along with its lyrical beauty. The sahitya gave her ample scope to exhibit her abhinaya prowess, be it the excitement of Radha after her first meeting with Lord Krishna or feeling of embarrassment infront of her friends while Krishna threw down his garland which settled around Radha’s neck. The graceful movements, captivating stage presence and excellent rhythmic sense made the repertoire enjoyable. Bal Krishna Nartan, danced by the tiny tots of the academy was lively and colourful. Young Krishna and his friends stole the show with their spontaneous movements.
