Q: I have a gap of seven years post education, and I am finding it very difficult to get a good job. I have done BCom and MBA (marketing). I don’t like marketing job. I am planning to do ERP in SD. Would that help me get a job?
Ria M
A: The ERP market is good and you can get a job in SD module. This module would also help you since you have an MBA in marketing. But you would be joining as a junior in the organisation. You can always try for marketing or brand management if you have the requisite skill set.
Q: I have an MBA in finance and marketing from Sikkim Manipal University. I have been working as a medical representative in a pharmaceutical company. But I want to be a teacher. I heard that Icfai University conducts four-year PhD in management. Would a PhD get me a teaching job? Rakesh Sharma
A: You do not require a PhD for a teacher’s job. If you want to teach in schools, you need a BEd. If you want to teach finance in MBA colleges, your current qualification would suffice. You can also start your own institute, or with a group of people. In any of the above instances a PhD is just an additional qualification.
Q: I got 78 per cent in Class X. But I failed for two consecutive years in Class XII after opting for science. I still have a chance to appear for physics compartment examination in 2012 but science is not my cup of tea. I am pursuing BPP from Ignou and intend to do a BA after that. Will I be eligible to appear for civil services examination after that?
Arunava Biswas
A: You should check the civil services website for the latest amendments in the qualifications required for the examination. Since you have failed for two consecutive years, I do not think you would be eligible for the examination.
Q: I have a BCA and an MBA in marketing. I have worked in the BPO sector for more than three years as an operations executive. Currently, I am working in the marketing department of a mining company. But I would like to shift to HR. What should I do?
Dipti Ranjan Das
A: Since you do not have any qualification or experience in HR, it would be difficult for you to get a job in some other organisation. You could approach your company to work in the HR department. You can also try working for a recruitment agency for a couple of years and then look for a job in HR. Meanwhile, you can do a correspondence course in HR to augment your qualification.
Q: I am a 21-year-old graduate. I want to know whether a course from IFBI would give me a proper job in the banking sector. What course should I do?
Prakash Pandey
A: IFBI is a specialised institute catering to the banking, insurance and financial sectors. Keeping pace with the economic growth, regulatory reforms and overall modernisation, IFBI’s career programmes are designed to suit modern-day banking, insurance and financial services. A course from IFBI would definitely help you get a job in the banking sector. Depending on your interest you can do a PG diploma in banking or banking operations.
Q: I have done MBA in finance and HR from Nagpur University. What kind of jobs can I get in Calcutta?
Saheli Das
A: If you want to work in the finance section, you would get a job as a finance or accounts executive in any organisation. If you are interested in bigger organisations, you can also try for the treasury function. If you want to build your career in HR, you would start as an HR executive, looking after recruitment and also organising training programmes for employees.
Q: I am doing BTech in electronics and instrumentation engineering. I want to do an MTech in the same branch. Is it advisable to go for an MTech after completing BTech or should I take up a job?
Ronak Kagrana
A: I think you should complete MTech before embarking on a career path. An MTech would give you better job opportunities and might also put you on a faster career track, depending on your performance. In fact, after you have gained industry experience, it would be advisable to go for an MBA for furthering your career prospects.
Q: I am a 26-year-old commerce graduate with an advance diploma in financial accounting system and certifications in Tally ERP 9 and KDK e-taxation. I have two years of work experience in BPO and want to move to accounts and finance. I am thinking of doing either MSc from Ignou or SAP training in FI / CO modules. Am I on the right track?
Abhishek Nandi
A: With your current qualification, you can get a job in any organisation in finance and accounts function. I would advise you to gain experience for a couple of years before looking for qualification enhancement. If you feel that you can manage studies and work at the same time, you might do a course in FI / CO which would help you further your career in finance.
Q: I am a 30-year-old BCom graduate. I wanted to know whether the experience of working in a top KPO in Calcutta would be of any value in future?
Indrajit Das
A: The value you get from a particular career is directly proportional to the value you give to the organisation. If you like a job and give your 100 per cent to that then you would definitely derive the value. So, any job in which you are interested and do well would give you value. It is upto you to decide based on what you like and do not like. KPOs are specialised offerings and if the offerings of a particular KPO matches with your interest, then you would definitely derive value from that experience.
