Ranchi, Jan. 13: The World Bank ban on IT major Wipro has failed to dent its image as a job-giver in the state.

A day after reports on the ban were flashed by the media, students of St Xavier’s College, Ranchi, where Wipro is supposed to conduct campus placement later this month, appeared unperturbed. Rather, they are keen on participating in the placement drive and are preparing themselves for the tests and interviews.

The students feel that the alleged ban of World Bank on Wipro, the third major IT company of the country after TCS and Infosys, would not have any negative impact on the financial health of the company.

“The World Bank is one of the many institutions the company is working with. Its ban on the company would have little impact,” said a student, requesting anonymity. The students, however, avoided discussing the ethical perspective of the ban.

According to reports, Wipro was one of the several Indian entities banned by the World Bank in July 2007 for providing “improper benefits” to the bank employees. The IT major was barred from bagging contracts, too.

But both teachers and students feel that the Satyam scam has brought disrepute to IT companies as a whole. The incident would not decrease the market demand of IT companies, though, they added.

“Through this incident, we told the world community that we are not entirely reliable. We must also tell the world that we are reliable through our actions,” said Swarat Choudhari, teacher-in-charge for the Wipro campus recruitment at St Xavier’s College.

Around 100 students of four science streams — physics, mathematics, computer and IT — today filled up the application forms, registering themselves for the Wipro tests.

The company would directly recruit students who have a first division in all examinations starting from Class X. After the candidates are selected, the company enrolls them for a four-year masters course in software in BITS, Pilani. The students are paid a stipend of Rs 8,000 to 18,000 during this period.
