Jamshedpur boy Vishal Singh is leading the East Zone U-19 team in the four-day Inter Zonal One-Day Cricket Tournament, which began in Chennai on Tuesday.

Vishal, a stylish all-rounder with a sound technique, is, however, not the only player from the state who has made it to the team. Four others from Jharkhand — Virat Singh, Sashim Rathore, Monu Kumar Singh and Kaushal Singh — have also made the cut to the 15-member zonal outfit that starts its campaign against Central on Wednesday.

Vishal has had the experience of captaining the state colts’ team that made it to the knockout stages of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy. A right-handed batsman, he picked up his cricket lessons and perfected his skills at Ulyan-based Jharkhand Cricket Academy.

The youngster had come up with a credible performance during the Vinoo Mankad Trophy league tournament, which was held in Assam’s Tinsukia, to help the state maintain a clean state. The 18-year-old struck a fluent 61 against Tripura and tormented Bengal with the ball in a later game, picking up 6 wickets for 38 runs.

Rathore proved an able ally to his skipper hammering 71 and 38, respectively, against Bengal and Tripura during the state’s outing in that meet. Vishal’s younger brother Virat, too, showed signs of brilliance in one of the matches against Bengal, scoring a sparkling 40.

Apart from Jharkhand’s five, the others in the squad were Ankit Keshri, Amir Goni, Alok Pratap Singh, Ravikant Singh (Bengal), Wasikur Rehman, Roshan Alam (Assam), Udayan Bose, Saurav Das (Tripura), Priyatosh Pramanik and Ranjit Singh (Odisha).

Satish Singh will take over as team coach while Devesh Chandra will train the boys. Kaustav Bhardwaj and Gourpoda Banik have been appointed physio and manager, respectively.
