Jamshedpur, Sept. 16: Daewoo trucks, made in Jamshedpur.

Tata Motors could soon add a new assembly line for manufacturing two models of Daewoo trucks at its plant here. The automobile giant recently acquired the ailing South Korean company?s commercial vehicle unit.

Director (motors) Ravi Kant arrived in the city from Mumbai this morning and, after attending a meeting at the Tata Steel guesthouse in Dimna, headed for the plant.

Company officials said Kant held a series of talks with senior executives from different departments. No official word was forthcoming, but informed sources said discussions were held on the possibilities of rolling out the trucks from the plant here, the oldest unit of Tata Motors. The company has two other plants in Pune and Lucknow.

?Discussions ranged from the possibilities of manufacturing the new models of the Korean vehicles in the city unit of the company to further improving the quality of the product. The deliberations lasted over four hours,? said an official.

Tata Motors has two assembly lines in Jamshedpur for manufacturing its own heavy vehicles. The official said a new line was in the offing from where the trucks will roll out.

Kant made an on-the-spot assessment of plants I and II and the outer complex of the company ? three possible venues within the company for setting up the third assembly line. ?It is yet to be decided where the new assembly line would come up. A final decision is expected to be taken shortly,? the official said.

Initially, the company will procure all parts of the vehicles from Daewoo Motors and assemble them at the Jamshedpur unit. ?As a beginning, the company will make a small number of Korean trucks. The numbers will go up if there is sufficient demand,? sources said.

Officials believe the demand would be ?spontaneous? and ?huge?.

Kant is understood to have stressed the need for the company to make its mark as a global player in the automobile sector. ?He made it clear that there should not be any compromise on quality as Tata Motors has set its eyes on becoming one of the foremost global players in the automobile sector,? sources said.

As a first step, old machinery has been replaced with new ones and strict quality control measures are being followed in the production process, sources said.
