Jamshedpur, July 11: City-based singer and writer Rajendra Prasad Sah is coming up with a collection of Tagore's songs in Bhojpuri, the first such experiment in line with similar laudable efforts in Hindi, English, German, French and Russian.
His album titled " Jaagat Bital Rain Ari (I Stayed Awake all Night)" will be released tomorrow on the occasion of International Bhojpuri Mahotsava at Michael John Auditorium in Bistupur.
The celebrations will be graced by Bhojpuri singers Bharat Sharma Vyas, Sushri Devi and Bishnu Ojha and filmmaker Sashidhar Singh.
The 52-year-old singer, who has been rendering Rabindrasangeet for more than two decades, dedicated the album, comprising 11 songs of Tagore, to Bhojpuri music lovers, who were otherwise bereft of its charm due to language barrier.
"The 45-minute album has three songs from Tagore's classic Geetanjali while eight songs have been picked from other collections. I hope Bhojpuri people will like the experiment. I have tried to retain the tunes and meanings of the songs, only replacing the words in Bhojpuri. It took three years to translate the songs from Bengali to Bhojpuri," said Rajendra, who holds a Sangeet Vibhakar degree from Bangiya Sangeet Parishad, Calcutta University.
For example, Amaro porano jaha chai... is Heara hamar jake chahe... in Bhojpuri while Bodo asha kore eshechi... is Bahute asha leke aili... and Nishidin bhorsa rakhis hobei hobe... is Nitahin bharosa rakha hoi hoi...
The Parsudih-based singer, trained in Rabindrasangeet under Samar Sinha, said it was his long-time dream, which was going to be fulfilled tomorrow.
"The album is also part of my fight against use of vulgar lyrics in Bhojpuri songs. It has meaningful songs, which express different facets of life as seen by Tagore. I am sure Bhojpuri music lovers, who detest vulgarism in music, will like it," said Rajendra, who runs a Rabindrasangeet training school, "Sonar Turi", in Jamshedpur.
Music for the album was arranged by Calcutta-based Abhijeet and his group and recorded at a Jamshedpur studio.
Rajendra is also associated with social organisations like Jamshedpur Bhojpuri Sahitya Parishad and others.
