Jamshedpur, April 9: Two persons committed suicide in separate neighbourhoods today, taking the count of reported cases of suicides to five in the past nine days.

All five were women — two in their teens and three were middle-aged.

Today, 17-year-old Kumari Anamika, a resident of ECC Flats under Kadma police station, died after hanging herself from her room’s ceiling fan.

Yashoda Devi of CP Tola in Bagbera also chose to take her life in the same manner today.

Police believe that Anamika, who was preparing for her engineering examinations, was “upset” over some issue.

“Anamika, who stayed at her maternal uncle’s house in Kadma, was alone at the time of the incident. She was preparing for her engineering entrance test from a private coaching institute. We believe she took the step after getting upset over some matter,” said Amarjeet Prasad, the officer in charge of Kadma police station.

The girl, however, left no suicide note behind.

Anamika was found at 8am by her relatives. The police have kept the body at Tata Main Hospital morgue for the post-mortem.

The deceased’s parents, who reside in Sahebgunj, are on their way to Jamshedpur. “They asked us to keep the body in the morgue and we have done that because that is the protocol,” Prasad added.

At CP Tola, 35-year-old Yashoda also ended her life by hanging herself.

The deceased was a cancer patient.

In this case, the police suspect that the deceased was suffering from depression due to prolonged illness.

According to Bagbera police station in charge, Yashoda’s husband had spent nearly Rs 1.5 lakh for her treatment. “But the treatment was not making her better and that probably made the homemaker depressed,” said a personnel at the station.

Yashoda’s body has been sent for post-mortem to MGM Medical College and Hospital.

Significantly, five cases of suicides were reported from the steel city in the past week. In most cases, police believe the suicides were related to depression arising out of family problems.

On April 1, a student of Class VIII of an English-medium school, killed herself by hanging from the ceiling.

The 13-year-old girl was alone at her Railway Hospital home near Khasmahal under Parsudih police station. Her mother is a teacher at the Railway School.

In another case, one Sunita Devi set herself on fire at her Kapali Bustee home under Sonari police station on April 3. The 50-year-old, before taking the fatal move, locked all doors of her home so that no one could come in to save her.

Though neighbours gathered outside after hearing her scream they could do little to help her. The deceased had three daughters, who stayed out of station, and she lived alone. At Govindpur, on April 7, a woman immolated herself.
