Jamshedpur, Sept. 28: West Singhbhum civil surgeon P.C. Hembram today lodged an FIR against Chaibasa BJP legislator Putkar Hembram and his two supporters for allegedly assaulting members of a medical team in the diarrhoea-hit Tonto village in the district.
The medical team members, including two doctors, were allegedly beaten up by the legislator and his supporters at Tonto village late last night. This forced the medical team to rush back to Chaibasa, leaving their work midway.
The MLA has refuted the charge.
The two doctors, Rajiv Inder Kumar and Pramod Raj, who are seriously injuries, have been admitted to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital. The condition of the injured doctors is reported to be serious.
The civil surgeon, in the FIR, has told police that after getting information about spread of diarrhoea in the village, a medical team was sent to Tonto village.
The team members were carrying out their work when the MLA and his supporters, including Geeta Balmuchu and Sura Laguri reached there.
When the MLA reached the village, the medical team was busy examining and administering injection and saline to patients in a house.
The legislator wanted them to immediately stop their work and move on to another house but the doctors refused, said a health department official.
?The patients? condition was very serious and if the doctors would have left, it might have been fatal. But the MLA was adamant and his supporter, Sura Laguri, started beating up the team members. Laguri was joined by Geeta in thrashing the members. The doctors are seriously injured,? said sources.
Putkar Hembram refuted the allegation levelled against him by the civil surgeon. He termed the allegations baseless and a plan to fabricate him in a false case.
?In fact, I was the one who saved the doctors from the villagers? wrath. The villagers were very angry as the doctors were not doing their work properly. It was because my intervention they returned safely and now the civil surgeon is trying to falsely implicate me,? said the BJP legislator.
District superintendent of police Praveen Kumar Singh said the local police are investigating the matter. ?Attack on a medical team is a very serious matter and the guilty should not be spared,? he added.
The peeved legislator has said he would take up the matter with chief minister Arjun Munda, who is also the health minister.
?People in remote villages are not getting proper medical care. Moreover, officials like P.C. Hembram are trying to protect his staff through false case,? he added.
But the civil surgeon pointed out that this was not for the first time that the MLA and his supporters have targeted the health department staff.
?A couple of months ago, the legislator?s supporters not only assaulted a nurse at the Sadar hospital but had also tried to molest her. The MLA was present when his supporters tore the nurse?s clothes,? alleged P.C. Hembram.
