Two killed by elephants
Chaibasa: Two persons were killed by elephants on Sunday in separate incidents in Chaibasa block.
A 66-year-old man was trampled to death by an elephant on Sunday morning at Kundruhatu village under the muffassil police station.
Susing Jarika, a farmer, was on his way to his vegetable field, when the elephant killed him. The victim?s body was sent for post-mortem to the divisional hospital. According to the villagers, the elephant had been attacking the villages for the past few months.
Gono Banra, a resident of the Ruidih village under Khuntpani block, was killed also by an elephant on Sunday. Banra, along with his son and two villagers, was on his way to a nearby shop when the elephant appeared before them. While the other three managed to escape, Banra was trampled to death. The elephant later uprooted some trees and destroyed a hut. The villagers scared the animal away by lighting a fire.
Power anomalies
Giridih: The electricity department of Dumri block has written to the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police for clearance of dues of different government offices and police stations in the area. According to the department, the government offices under the deputy commissioner owe Rs 89 lakh.
Several police stations in the district are also under the scanner for acquiring illegal electricity connection. According to officials of the electricity department at Pirtand block, Madhuban outpost and Nimiaghat police station have taken illegal connection.
Jailer suspended
Seraikela: Lalan Kumar Sinha, jailer of Seraikela prison, has been suspended for triggering panic among the inmates. Sources said Sinha claimed that a prisoner had escaped causing jail superintendent Alibh Grace Kullu to rush to the prison. According to the sources, Sinha was mentally unstable and was undergoing treatment. No appointment has yet been made for the post of jailer.
Tots taken ill
Hazaribagh: Three children fell ill after eating contaminated food on Sunday afternoon. The children, identified as Anjani Kumari (6), Rani Kumar (4) and Manish Kumar (3), were rushed to a nearby hospital. Their condition was stated to be stable.
Ceremony
Chakradharpur: A scouts and guides investiture ceremony was held at Carmel school in Chakradharpur. The ceremony was attended by 60 students, including 10 bulbuls, two cubs, 25 guides and 21 scouts. The ceremony concluded with the oath-taking ceremony and distribution of batches and scarves.
Compensation
Bokaro: Managing director of Bokaro steel plant Udai Pratap Singh handed over cheques worth Rs 5 lakh each to the family members of deputy general manager R.Murlidhar and assistant manager P.P. Gupta, who died in an accident on February 15. The compensation was paid by Oriental Insurance Company Limited.
Truck recovered
Hazaribagh: Barhi police on Sunday recovered a truck from Barkatha, which was stolen in Kariyatpur. The driver informed the police that a group of criminals forced him and his cleaner at gun-point to hand over the keys of the truck. The police found the truck within five hours of the incident, but some goods were missing. An FIR has been lodged by the truck driver.
Seminar
Ranchi: Governor Syed Sibtey Razi will address a seminar, ?Contribution of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in the field of education?, to mark the 47th death anniversary of the country?s first education minister on February 22. The seminar is being organised by Maulana Azad College and Ranchi University.
Lecture
Ranchi: Ashish Gupta, the director of National Centre for Plant Genome Research, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, will visit BIT, Mesra, on Monday. He will deliver a lecture in the Golden Jubilee Lecture Series organised by BIT. The programme will be held in the institute?s auditorium, a release informed.
