Jamshedpur, Feb. 19: A day after he was shot at by a teenager, Adityapur-based builder Sanjay Jha succumbed to his injuries at Tata Main Hospital (TMH) this morning.

Doctors said the 42-year-old victim’s condition deteriorated because blood loss had caused a drastic drop in his pressure. Jha was shifted to the critical care unit, where he died at 8am.

Police have converted a case of attempted murder to murder and arrested one of the two suspects, Chandan Rai. The other accused, Raja Singh, is still absconding. Investigating officers are yet to ascertain the actual motive behind the shooting. Adityapur inspector Mohammad Nihaluddin said they suspected the involvement of an extortion gang. “The killing may be fallout of business rivalry, but extortionists are more likely to be involved. We are investigating the case,” he said.

Raja and Chandan had reportedly intercepted Jha in Adityapur yesterday morning and the former hitched a ride on his bike. Raja then shot at the builder from close range and escaped. Emphasising the gravity of the crime, which took place in broad daylight and in a busy industrial area, Jha’s family members and local residents pressed for a CID inquiry.

Meanwhile, the condition of Sanjay Gorai, who was also shot at and injured by four motorcycle-borne criminals at Sonari last night, is critical. Police have registered a case of attempted murder against four, including one Toni Majumdar of Birsanagar. City SP Jatin Narwal said the firing was fallout of enmity between the victim and the assailants.

In another incident, police recovered the body of a 28-year-old man, identified as Sanjay Sharma, from a pond in Bhilaipahadi under MGM police station this morning. Sharma was an auto driver.
