What was the problem that had affected sales of the khadi products in recent times?
Even after the formation of a separate state, the governing body had continued working from Patna. Our state board came into existence in January 2005. We were asked to temporarily discontinue sales, so that other stores could finish off with their stock under the old board and start afresh under the new one. After an interval of nine months, we were provided with a fresh stock. At present there are two outlets that have started selling.
Synthetic materials have flooded the market. Where do you think khadi scores over them?
The biggest advantage of khadi products is the fact that they are natural. It does not have any adverse effect on the skin, as it is obtained from natural sources. Also, they are very comfortable to wear and fit for all seasons.
From where do the state outlets get their khadi products?
Since Jharkhand is yet to begin with its own production unit, we get our stock of silk from Kuchai ? a place near Kharsawan district ? known for producing quality silk. For our cotton varieties, we get our stock from Jaipur and some parts of West Bengal. Senior state khadi board officials have finalised talks and dispatched our collection of woollen garments from Kashmir, which we will receive in a few days time.
How popular is the use of khadi here?
Khadi is quite popular among the people of the city. There is a growing demand for khadi products here. People prefer the comfort, quality and affordability that it provides. This sector, however, needs a boost in terms of better marketing and promotion. Though most people realise the benefits of khadi, some still retain an affinity with the synthetic fabric for its shine.
